Solo trekking set to be banned in Nepal

According to a recent announcement by Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs, tourists will no longer be allowed to trek on their own in any region of the country.

The new policy, which could come into effect in September, will require solo trekkers or FITs (Free Independent Trekkers) to take at least one local support staff, either a guide or porter.

The Nepalese Government, which still has to wait for the Ministry of Tourism to make the decision mandatory, has apparently brought in the new policy after increasing concern about the safety of trekkers.

Jon Johnson final day in Kathmandu

A day to rest and recover. Jon visited all the great sites in Kathmandu including the wonderful Bodnath temple. A final farewell dinner with the guides then off home. Hope it was  a great trip.

Jon Johnson trek update

Jon and the crew of Pimba, Dawa and Dorchee Wangdak arrived at Syange village today on the final leg of their trek. Tomorrow they head back to Kathmandu and a well earned night in a comfy bed (maybe even a beer!!) Jon is staying on for an extra night in Khatmandu.

Jon Johnson trek update

Jon and the team reached Bim Thang today and all well and strong.

Left  Larky Phedi and reached the northern face of the Larkya Glacier with great views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. Then walked down to Tanbuche and from there down to Bim Thang.

 

Jon Johnson Manaslu trek update

Jon is continuing to make good progress and is enjoying lots of great Nepali food along the way……

Today he followed the Buri Gandaki surrounded by spectacular mountains on all sides. Manaslu is particularly impressive and e took  a detour off the main path to visit Manaslu base camp. From here he dropped back down to re-join the main route and climbed steadily to the Larkya La pass from where there were stunning views in all directions. Finally he descended to Samdo for the night.

Day 8: arrived in Namrung (2560m)

Jon is feeling great and really enjoying the local nepali food – (bhat, dal, tarkari).   The weather is being very kind to them and staying clear and bright as they left Dent’s steep-sided valley this morning.  Today they have trekked through the village of Lama where there are many Mani stones and visited the Tibetan village of Ghap before reaching Namrung in the Manaslu basin, where they will stay overnight.
